The red thread legend

The red thread legend

There is a very old Asian legend that is very popular in Japan. It tells that there is an invisible red threat that connects the little fingers of two people who are destined to be together.

It doesn't matter if the two persons live in the opposite part of the world or if their circumstances are very difficult. The thread might get stretched by the distance or tangled by the circumstandes, but it will never get broken. Destiny will bring both of them together at the right time.

The legend tells that a god living in the moon sometimes comes to Earth and shows someone their soulmate by making the red thread visible. In one of his visits, he shows a young boy his soulmate, but, because the boy was too young and inmature, he throws a stone to the litte girl and runs away.
Many years later, his parents arrange a marriage for him, and, when he meets his bride for the first time, he notices a scar on her eyebrown. When he asks about it, she tells him that when she was very young, a boy through a stone to her. Then, he realizes she is the same girl, making him so ashamed and greatly regrett his bad actions.

The red thread legend has been the inspiration of many stories, movies, poetry and songs along the years. This romantic idea of being connected to your soulmate by a red thread captivated me since the first time I heard it. Now I was able to contribute to this beautiful legend designing a glass pen with Lucas Mahoney from Hanabi Glass Studio.
